What was Bernie thinking?

madoff.jpgWe may never know what what fraudmaster Bernie Madoff was thinking as he systematically fleeced  his investors of millions,  but thanks to the asset recovery project run by court-appointed trustee Irving H. Picard we can at least know  what he was drinking.

On May 18, Morrell Company Fine Wine Auctions will bring down the hammer on the seized contents of Bad Bernie’s winecellar. Here’s the notice about it from their current catalogue . . .

Lastly, we have humbly accepted the opportunity to sell the seized cellar contents of two properties owned by Bernie Madoff on behalf of the United States Marshals office. The proceeds from the sale of these items will go towards the general recovery effort. As artifacts of history they are unique, which is why we have chosen to offer all of the bottles seized, including those which normally wouldn’t pass muster and make it into our auction. Some of the bottles are better viewed as conversation pieces rather than valued for their contents, but conversation pieces they are .

See everything Bernie was drinking here and be sure to tell us if you see anything that might explain his spectacularly self-destructive behavior.

The one bottle we can think of that might provide a clue is, alas, nowhere in sight.  How relieved must Oregon’s Ponzi Vineyards be that that none of their wines were found in the schemer’s cellar?
